Was Greenland filmed in Greenland?

Have you ever heard of the 2020 movie Greenland? Have you ever wondered what the title has to do with its content and whether parts of this gripping disaster movie were filmed in Greenland?

You’re not alone! It turns out that there is much more complexity behind this seemingly simple question than one would think.

In today’s blog post, we look in-depth into where the scenes for Greenland were shot and how they play into the story presented on-screen.

So, if you are curious about learning all there is to know about location shooting for films – read on!

Was Greenland filmed in Greenland

Where did they film Greenland?

No, The movie Greenland is not filmed in Greenland.

Forget the icy wilderness of Greenland because it turns out this movie was shot in warm and sunny Atlanta and Conyers, Georgia!

Who would have thought? And they didn’t stop there – they even threw in some shots at Robins AFB, Georgia, for good measure.

So, if you ever find yourself lost in these locations, don’t be surprised if Gerard Butler isn’t too far behind.

Why did they go to Greenland in the movie Greenland?

In the movie Greenland, the characters travel to Greenland to seek shelter from a catastrophic comet heading toward Earth.

Think about it – Greenland is a perfect place to hide an underground bunker and add to the movie’s suspense.

Greenland is known for its extreme weather conditions and mountainous terrain, so it has much potential for an apocalyptic movie like this.

Plus, the cold climate helps to create a sense of fear and uncertainty in the film’s audience.

Greenland also has an element of danger because no one knows what lies beneath all that ice and snow – another reason Greenland is the perfect place for a movie like this.

And let’s be honest – just the name of the country, Greenland, is enough to imagine the sort of danger that awaits on-screen.

So, while Greenland was not filmed in Greenland – the director has done a fantastic job creating an intense and engaging atmosphere with the locations they chose to shoot!

But unfortunately, the icy wilderness of Greenland in the movie isn’t what it was in real life – instead, it is made up of sets, green screens, and composite shots.

However, the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland that our movie’s heroes are heading towards is a real-life location!

Pituffik Space Base, or Thule Air Base, is an American military base north of Greenland.

It is one of the northernmost bases in the world and has been used since World War II for communications between Europe, North America, and the Arctic.

It provides an essential link to the American military presence in Europe.

In the movie, the base is a haven from the comet and its destructive fireballs.

It gives our characters a chance to escape the chaos in other parts of the world – making it an essential part of this intense film.

So, next time you watch Greenland, remember that some real-life locations are scattered throughout the movie.

The filmmakers did an excellent job creating a believable world for us to explore – even if it wasn’t filmed in Greenland!

Greenland is easily one of the best disaster movies of the year, and its unique locations make it worth watching. So, grab some popcorn and get ready for this epic movie!

You won’t regret it.

My honest opinion of the movie

I hope you don’t think I am obsessed with Greenland because of the movie – the opposite is true.

I knew about the film only two years later after it was released!

One day my father called me and told me there’s a movie about Greenland on the television – and I was so excited: he knows how I love Greenland!

But when I read the short information on the movie, I was like – What? It’s not about Greenland! What are they using this beautiful name for?

Don’t get me wrong – I like horror and action movies and Gerard Butler’s acting.

But I love Greenland more than anything, so I think “real” movies about Greenland are more worth watching – like “Against The Ice” and “Journey to Greenland” on Netflix.

But after another year, I saw the movie aired again on television, so I watched it out of curiosity.

Well, what will I tell you – I love it! I was so honored that they used Greenland in the movie’s plot, and for several hours, it seemed like Greenland became a mainstream travel destination to go to!

It’s about teamwork, courage, and hope in the face of disaster. Who doesn’t love all these things?

Overall, Greenland is an enjoyable movie with brilliant acting and breathtaking scenes!

I’m glad I watched it, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

Aluu! My name is Matan, and I have a weird obsession with Greenland. I love everything about it - the mystery, the uniqueness, and the wildness. My friends think I'm crazy for liking it so much ("Why can't you be a normal person who wants to visit the USA or Western Europe?"), but to me, there's nothing like Greenland in the world - and trust me, I'm traveling a lot!

About Me

Hi! My name is Matan, and I was born in a small town in Israel. As soon as I could, I started traveling the world and exploring every corner of it that I could.

My obsession with Greenland developed when I read about the Norse settlements there over 1,000 years ago. To me, it’s one of the most mysterious places on Earth-

It’s a place where glaciers meet the sea, and icebergs dot the horizon. Its people are warm and welcoming, and its culture is rich and fascinating.

I can’t wait to share my love for this far, remote, unique, and extraordinary place on my website!
